Mining Operations to 1944

Photographs show a primitive operation at Robert Fitzsimmons’s International Bitumen Company Ltd. camp in the 1920s. Working on a small scale did not require a significant mining operation. In 1931, a plant capable of producing 60 barrels of bitumen per day was constructed, and Fitzsimmons noted that a 40 ft. (12 m) thick seam of sand with 2 ft. (61 cm) of overburden was being mined as “...purely a stripping operation.” Production was subsequently increased to 200 barrels per day, and in July 1936, Harry F. Everard—the petroleum engineer Fitzsimmons hired to build a refinery at Bitumount—reported on the progress of the project:

While on the inspection trip to the properties of the International Bitumen Company, for the purpose of picking the site for the erection of the refinery I made observations of numerous things, one the vast amount of crude bitumen obtainable and the one thing that really surprised me is that the material is so close to the surface and the ease in handling.

When it came to actually digging the sand from the ground the following year, Everard found that there were some challenging conditions:

...we have struck a seam of asphalt in the pit, which comes in spots and when it hits the crusher, the crusher teeth imbed themselves, thereby stopping the crusher as the material is not hard enough to crush and too tough to pull through. It is almost impossible to see in the pit. We have also struck a ledge of hard rock in the pit which will run from a foot to two feet thick in spots.
We have reversed the bucket and are dragging the overburden down to the creek and will wash it from there. It takes too long to wash it off the top on account of the roots and rocks.

Sometime after July 1937, a dragline was installed. This large bucket was attached to a cable slung from a pulley above the platform located at the startpoint of the separation process.

By 1944, excavation machinery had made it to the quarry at Bitumount:

Bituminous sand in the pit was broken out of the beds by a bulldozer and pushed into the path of the dragline. For part of the season’s run, material was shaved off the surface of a hump of sand beds. When the hump was reduced to a height of about 5 feet, this whole thickness of beds was worked by pushing along the faces with the corner of the bulldozer blade. By the time the sand was broken out of the beds, shoved to the dragline and dragged up the track to the plant, very little in the way of lumps remained, at least, lumps of any size.

When the new project was begun at Bitumount in 1945, the old mine site was abandoned in favour of one some distance to the south, and the method of mining was changed.
